ALEXANDRA MIKELIS AND MARK ARCHER

MILOS

We have a very special connection to Milos. Not only is Alex’s Greek heritage from the island,
but we’ve completely fallen in love with its chilled vibe, super warm people and stunning raw beauty and we’re sure you will too.

Milos is a small(ish), authentic, laidback island in the Cyclades. Often referred to as the jewel of the Aegean,
the island is famous for its many many beaches, crystal blue sea, the geology, the wind, the masterpiece sculpture of Aphrodite
(aka the “Venus de Milo” and which was discovered buried close the reception venue) and Alex’s great, great, great grandfather,
Petros Mikelis, who was infamously shot by an Ottoman sniper and died in Navarino in 1827. His sad demise was responsible
for the unintended start of the Battle of Navarino, the outcome of which ensured Greece’s independence. Legend.

There are 3 main villages on the island, each with their own distinct character; Pollonia, Plaka and Adamas.
Whilst nothing is very far apart, you’ll need transport to ensure that you don’t miss the best bits around
(taxis are quite expensive and not always readily available).

POLLONIA
PLAKA
ADAMAS

TRYPITI

POLLONIA
is an old picturesque fishing harbor in the north of the island which has some beautiful tavernas perched by the sea, a couple of bars, a very convenient sandy beach and lots of lovely accommodation options. We love Pollonia, will be staying there ourselves and highly recommend that you stay there too. Transport will be provided to and from the wedding venues on Sunday and you can walk to the beach for the after-party on Monday.

PLAKA
is the island's old town – think old, rustic, traditional and perched up on a hill with stunning sunsets and some great eating and drinking options. It’s where we will meet on Friday evening for the pre-wedding welcome dinner and it’s also a 5/10 minute walk to the church in Trypiti, so a good option if you would prefer to stay central.
ADAMAS
(aka Adamantas)
is the port and largest and busiest town on the island. It has cafes, tavernas and bars to please the tourists, but we would highly recommend Pollonia and then Plaka over Adamas (particularly as you’ll need to make your own way to and from the wedding venues if you choose stay in Adamas).

Feeling adventurous??

A boat trip around the south of the island to the caves at Kelftiko is a total must for a day of fun on the sea.
Most boats leave from Adamas with some leaving from Pollonia and they vary in price.
If you fancy a private Catamaran, give these guys a shout,
for powerboats we recommend this page and for other private hires, check out this site
(but there are loads of other options).

Or, if you want to escape the sun (or walk around in it), the ancient catacombs in Plaka are cool,
a hike to the top of Plaka is worth it for the 360 views (but don’t do this at midday)
and the mining museum is always an option…. :))

If you have had enough of Milos’ beaches, you can take a short ferry ride from Pollonia to Kimolos – Milos’ little sister island,
to see some more amazing beaches and a quiet, pretty village and lovely tavernas.

Recommended tavernas

Rifaki, Pollonia (Always good, very reasonable, super friendly and perfectly cold beer.)
Oh! Xamos!, Adamas (Traditional food from field to plate; very, very tasty and right next to the beach.)
Gialos, Pollonia (Contemporary Greek, excellent wine list.)
Medusa, Mandrakia (Beautiful setting and delicious sea-food - highly recommended.)
Astakas, Klima (Lovely restaurant on the water's edge in the scenic bay of Klima, epic sunset.)
Empourios Taverna (Worth the slightly hairy drive for the fresh fish and beautiful setting.)
